Is a 55 WPM typing speed good enough?

I have reached 55 WPM from using Typesy.

Hi Havin,

Typing at a speed of 55 WPM or higher is very good. The key element that helps faster typists is touch typing. Touch typing is a method where you use muscle memory, not your eyes, to find the keys. Although this can take some getting used to, it’s much easier to type when you don’t have to check to make sure that you have the correct letter or number – and your accuracy improves when you can look at the screen to make sure that your words are coming out as planned. Practice through games and repeated typing exercises, like those represented in Typesy’s interactive curriculum, will train your fingers to recognize the keyboard and progress far beyond your typing speed.

Hello, @havincroft!

In general, the average typist can type 41 WPM; typing at or above 57 WPM is deemed above average. So congratulations on reaching 55!

It is important to note that a high WPM with low accuracy is not a desirable goal; the amount of time needed to correct typing errors should be taken into account when testing a true WPM, so I would keep an eye on your Typesy Mastery Metric score for a rounded view of your progress.

As far as 55 WPM being “good enough,” it depends on your goal! If you were hoping to reach an average mastery of touch typing, you’ve done it! Only you can decide whether or not you want to keep working to improve from here.

Wishing you the best of luck!
