Unlearning hunt and peck

Can I still unlearn the habit of hunt and peck?

Hi Alanna,

I hope you are having a great day.

The famous “hunt and peck” method, where you stare at your keys and peck at your keyboard like a chicken looking for food. Learning touch typing will help you eliminate this technique, but you can spur it on by forcing your wrists to stay parallel to the table. If they creep higher, force them down again until you are unable to use your preferred method of typing.

Thanks, and I hope that helped.

Hi there, @alannastamp!

Absolutely! Anything learned can be unlearned with enough patience and practice. The reason it is suggested to start young is that the older a student, the longer they have had to develop bad habits, but that does certainly not mean you can’t transition to good habits!

It may take a little bit of time to transition, but in the long run, a mastery of touch typing will ensure you are typing in the most efficient and safe way possible.
