# Is speech recognition a threat to typing?

Hi there,
Although speech-recognition, swipes, touchscreens, and thumb-texting can be useful in certain situations, nothing else offers a total replacement for keyboarding. Most observers expect the keyboard + mouse combination to remain the primary input devices at home and work for many years to come., After all, keyboards are familiar, fast, flexible, inexpensive, private, and precise.

Hi Taran,
You bring up an interesting question. It is possible in long run, but speech recognition software has a long way to go to make it 100% transferable. I use speech to text often in my work. I always need to go back and reread my work to edit what the computer heard. I am still using my touch typing skills on a daily basis.
