Will touch typing help my kids to improve their focus whenever they are working on something?

Hi Traci,

Typing skills let you improve your focus on any given computer task. A proficient typist has mastered this motor skill, so it becomes an automated cognitive process, pretty much like riding a bicycle. You don’t think about what you’re doing when you type, you just do it. As a result, the process of writing reports or working with a keyboard becomes something you don’t have to devote mental energy to, leaving your mind free to process other information.

Hi there, @tracipaul!

I’m not sure touch typing will miraculously get your kids focused up entirely, but it certainly helps! As Aidan mentioned, a mastery of touch typing means _any_ activity involving typing will need less focus since your kids aren’t using so much brain power figuring out where the letters are on a keyboard. It also frees up your eyes! Without needing to look at the keys, your kids would be free to focus on their screen, a book, an ongoing lecture, etc.

In summary, touch typing won’t turn your kids into hyper focused robots, but it will free up some of the focus that was previously spent on typing! Since touch typing is a skill for life, that freed up focus is sure to add up.
